Help Handicapped International (HHI) is an Indian charity working extensively in the field of fitment of Jaipur foot and Callipers, distribution of Wheelchairs, Tricycles and Crutches to the physically challenged as well as the organization of Eye camps for cataract surgery and fitting of spectacles.
It is now also venturing into fabricating special custom made tricycles (3 wheeler cycle) to be used as a Mobile vending/service vehicle to generate income for youth with a strong upper torso but crippled lower limbs.
HHI is successfully running a centre in Mumbai, India for fitting of Jaipur foot and Callipers. It has on its rolls prosthetic engineers, trained and experienced technicians, social workers and counsellors.
HHI is currently involved in supporting projects in India, Sudan, Kenya, Bujumbura, Uganda, Malawi, Rwanda, Zambia and Nigeria.
HHI is an NGO having Special Consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of United Nations and participates regularly in its deliberations.
In addition to this HHI, through an associate trust (www.rnct.org) is also organizing Mobility camps at various centres all over India. These camps of 2 to 5 days duration offer facilities for fitment of Jaipur foot and Callipers as well as distribution of Tricycles, Wheelchairs and Crutches to the orthopaedically handicapped. A fleet of fully equipped and manned Hospital Vans provide such services right at the doorstep of the beneficiaries at the village level.
For the hearing impaired appropriate hearing aids are given based upon their audiogram (result of an audiological test) conducted on site through a Mobile Hospital Van.
HHI also organizes Jaipur foot camps in several conflict areas of the world where an overwhelmingly large number of amputees, mostly landmine victims, await rehabilitation.
The Jaipur foot is a limb prosthetic designed and developed in India using locally available raw materials and general purpose machinery. It is the most preferred prosthetic in Asia and Africa because of its light weight, durability and optimum cost. It allows for squatting, cycling and working in the fields, all chores essential in this part of the world.
